As self-confessed beauty fanatics, we've tried every trend that comes across our desks. Chlorophyll? Take a sip. Rice water? Rinse with that. beat? Still. So of course we have to deal with the craze of the newest phenomenon: skin circulation.
The hashtag created by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe has been viewed nearly 200 million times on TikTok, prompting countless skin care enthusiasts to change their nightly skin care routines.
Convinced? Same thing. But before you start planning your “night out,” read on as we explore the benefits (if any) of skin circulation with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alpana Mohta, MD, MBBS, DNB.
What is skin circulation? Dermatology is an alternating skin care routine. "Skin cycling, which is popular on social media, allows the skin to have a 'rest day' to repair itself after using certain products," Dr. Mohtar.
"This can help prevent irritation and inflammation." The latter makes skin circulation especially popular for sensitive skin types, who may be wary of using active ingredients like retinol and acids.
How to start skin circulation. "A skin cycle is a four-day skin care routine—the first night is exfoliation, the second night is retinoid application, and the third and fourth nights are recovery, focusing on hydration and repairing the skin barrier," Says Dr. Mohtar. “Once the cycle is complete, it repeats.”
Night One: Peeling. First: exfoliate. Dr. Mohta specifically recommends chemical peels containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA), both of which are found in our Instant Resurfacing Mask.
(Note: We recommend only using the doctor visit service once a week.) If you prefer physical exfoliation, you can book an evening session with the Day Maker, which uses gentle microcrystals to remove dead, dull skin cells and rejuvenate the skin. Become brighter and softer for a cared-for complexion.
Night Two: Retinol. The next night, grab a retinol of your choice. "Retinoids are very effective, but can cause irritation if used too frequently or in combination with other potentially irritating ingredients," explains Dr. Mohtar.
"For this reason, it's best to use retinol on its own and not mix it with other exfoliating or rejuvenating products."
We know this is true for most retinols. That's why we've specially curated our sensitive-skin-approved Press Restart range, which contains gentle retinol alternatives to prevent any surface irritation and dryness.
Nights 3 and 4: Humidity. “Nights three and four are the recovery period,” Dr. says. Mohtar. "Exfoliating acids and retinoids should be avoided on these nights to give your skin a chance to rest." But that doesn't mean you have to leave your skin bare for two nights.
"Focus on nourishing your skin microbiome and repairing your moisture barrier with hydrating and hydrating products." For us, a solid night of recovery like our Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum, followed by our (Perfect Named) Recovery Mode Advanced Night Cream.
If you're feeling extra dry, apply a few drops of Antioxidant Oil Serum to lock in all the moisture and enhance your skin's natural glow.
While you can now consider your first round of skin cycling complete, it's not called a "cycle" for nothing. "After the fourth night, repeat the cycle from the beginning. This allows the skin to adjust to the active ingredients and prevents irritation," concludes Dr. Mohtar.
Is skin circulation worth the hype? Given that Dermal Cycles was created by a board-certified dermatologist, it's no surprise that this practice actually has some proven benefits.
However, this is certainly not what everyone needs. "Skin cycle is a beneficial skin care routine for all skin types, but is especially helpful for people with sensitive skin because it includes rest days," adds Dr. Mota added. "[It] may also be helpful for those using exfoliating serums or retinoids for the first time, or for those with skin conditions like rosacea."
If this doesn't sound right for you, there's no need to change your routine.
Just follow these skin care rules of thumb: Don’t over-exfoliate (aim for 1-3 nights a week) and use AHAs and retinols on different nights.
