How to combine skin care: Acne-prone and oily skin version


Our customer service channels answer this question almost every day: "How do I layer my skin care?" We don't blame them—figuring out what to use and when to use it is like solving a complex puzzle. This is especially true if you have acne-prone or oily skin—it's easy to make skin problems worse by using too many products or harsh ingredients. 

Taking into account the ingredients that work together and how often treatments like peels and facial scrubs are needed, we thought about creating a morning and evening skin care routine that you could use if you suffer from acne or oily skin.

We recommend rolling out products one at a time, or doing patch testing before redesigning your entire daily routine. Some treatments should only be used a few times a week to avoid stressing the skin. Below we indicate how often you should use them. 

Don’t forget that there are many causes of acne. For best results, avoid touching your face and causing breakouts, wash your pillowcases regularly, disinfect your phone, and avoid cleaning with scalding water. 

Morning skin care routine. 

Step 1: Salicylic Acid Cleanser. Start your routine with our Acne Soothing Cleanser. The hero here is 1.5% salicylic acid, a BHA that unclogs pores and eliminates breakouts. 

Anti-inflammatory blue tansy soothes irritation and redness, while apple fruit extract removes excess buildup and oil. 

Step 2: Toner with AHA (3-4 times a week). Grab a reusable cotton pad and apply Weekend Glow to your skin. Toners help absorb post-cleansing residue and makeup, while also using AHAs to remove dirt that may open pores. It also exfoliates and helps treat post-acne spots and hyperpigmentation. 

Step 3: Mud Mask (twice a week). On days when you're not using toner, incorporate a non-drying clay mask (like our Purifying Mask) into your routine once or twice a week. 

It uses a mixture of clay and charcoal to gently exfoliate the skin, absorb excess sebum and detoxify pores. 

Step 4: Purifying Essence. While skin is still slightly damp from toner or rinse-off mask, gently apply 2-3 drops of Just Breathe Clarifying Serum. 

Niacinamide, willow bark extract, and zinc work together to prevent breakouts, reduce inflammation, and strengthen and promote healthy, balanced skin. 

Step 5: Refreshing Moisturizer. Don't skip this step: Although it may seem counterintuitive, oily skin types should still moisturize. 

Otherwise, your skin may view a lack of moisture as a sign that it's producing more oil, making the situation worse. However, avoid heavy creams that may weigh you down and opt for a light cream like Dew Point. Yes, the gel-cream formula hydrates skin and is enriched with soothing green tea extract. 

Step 6: Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. Regardless of your skin type and concerns, everyone needs sun protection. Applying SPF daily can also prevent sun-induced acne from leaving hyperpigmentation and dark spots. 

Step 7: Body Spray (optional). Anyone prone to acne should also incorporate personal care into their daily routine. After a workout or shower, spray Back-Up Plan Acne Control Body Spray to prevent breakouts on your back, hips, shoulders, and more. 

Afternoon skin care routine. Step 1: Body exfoliation (once a week). Use the Day Maker to physically exfoliate 1-2 times a week. Its creamy texture is composed of uniform microcrystals (no crusts or seeds) that work to remove dead skin cells and other pore-clogging impurities. 

Step 2: Cleanser with Probiotics. Oily skin types often benefit from washing their face twice a day to remove excess sebum and create glow. Probiotics help keep the skin microbiome balanced by feeding beneficial bacteria and strengthening the skin's defense system. 

Wash your face with our creamy cleanser to reap the benefits of acne-fighting skin. It's also made with astringent blackberry vinegar, which inhibits acne-causing bacteria. 

Step 3: Facial exfoliation (once a week) Give yourself 2-3 minutes one night a week to use this instant rejuvenating mask. It contains AHAs, BHAs, and fruit enzymes to remove dead skin cells that clog pores while reducing redness and discoloration. Keep the rest of your daily routine gentle and avoid acids and retinols for 24 hours before and after use. 

Step 4: Retinol Serum (4 times a week) Not only is retinol an important ingredient in the fight against skin aging, its ability to promote cell renewal also benefits acne-prone skin. Retinol helps heal breakouts faster than retinol alone while reducing the appearance of large pores. 

Step 5: Refreshing Moisturizer If you have oily skin, use Dew Point again. If you are prone to acne but are on the dry side, you can use a thicker night cream. 

Step 6: Spot treatment (if applicable) Specially treat existing acne with topical treatments. If the acne is not inflammatory (like blackheads and whiteheads), use a drying treatment like Game Over.
