Anyone with acne-prone complexion knows how frustrating it can be to find a solution to pesky breakouts and clogged pores. But acne breaks out in hard-to-treat places like your back and butt? Ten times the feeling.
While you can use anti-acne body treatments, many experts also recommend back facials, or "facials," which not only clear up breakouts but also brighten and soften all skin from the neck down.
We reached out to celebrity esthetician Cynthia Franco and practicing esthetician Eden Gilliam to learn more about back facials, their benefits and how to do them at home.
What are the causes of acne on the body?
Body acne is very common (there’s a reason there are over 5 million search results on Google) and can be caused by a variety of things. Like acne on the face, acne is caused by a buildup of sweat, oil, dead skin cells, and/or bacteria in the pores.
Body acne is most commonly caused by inadequate cleansing after sweating or exercise, but it can also be triggered by hormones, inflammation, tight clothing, and external factors like scalding hot showers, body washes containing artificial fragrances, and more. Regular bedding.

What is a back facial?
As you may have guessed, a facial is actually a facial for the back (which can also include other areas of the body, such as the buttocks, back of the legs, and shoulders). A bacteriologist—yes, that’s a real position—cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and/or applies scrubs or masks based on the skin’s needs.
"After a tooth extraction, I use an exfoliation method of my choice based on my skin type. For dry skin, I use lactic acid. If acne is present, I opt for a salicylic acid treatment," says Franco, Backup Plan Acne Control Body Spray is also like this.
“If we want to reduce hyperpigmentation, I lean toward kojic acid, azelaic acid, and/or glycolic acid,” she adds. Likewise, our Doctor's Visit Instant Renewal Mask, with a blend of AHAs and vitamin C, is a great option.

What are the benefits of BACIAL?
Anyone concerned about personal hygiene can benefit from facial cleansing, especially if they suffer from painful cystic acne or wear tight uniforms every day.
It's also perfect for anyone wearing a backless dress or shorts. "I do a lot of back care during wedding season," Gilliam added. Results include soft texture, unclogged pores, reduced breakouts and a more even skin tone.

Essentially, it provides a healthy, comprehensive post-facial glow. "I tell my clients that it's important to take care of the skin everywhere. Back care is great for ensuring that the maximum surface area (of the body) stays healthy," Gilliam says. As with any skin care treatment, it is always important to apply sunscreen daily for protection.
How to give a back facial at home
While visiting a bacteriologist can be a nice treat, you can also be your own bacteriologist at home. We recommend using before bed to avoid exposing newly treated skin to sunlight.
Gilliam recommends using a back brush or strap along with your favorite acne cleanser in the shower.
You can choose body-specific solutions, but Keep the Peace Acne Calming Cleanser works just as well. "If you don't have inflamed acne on your back and shoulders, a body scrub is safe because if it does, it can cause more harm than good," says Gilliam. If you're extra careful, look for body scrubs that use gentle substances like lactic acid, like our Buff It Out AHA Exfoliating Body Scrub .
"Tooth extractions may be difficult for you to do at home, but a partner or friend can help you with a back mask," Gilliam adds.
Another tip is to apply product to your tanning mitt and hang it on the side of a hanger. This makes it easier to target hard-to-reach areas.
Once the mask is dry, return to the shower to rinse it off before applying body moisturizer, preferably a retinol body lotion to heal body acne and support cell turnover. Follow with body oil to add moisture and shine.
How often should I take BACIAL?
It depends on your skin condition and what you want to achieve. "If you have a lot of breakouts on your back and shoulders, a weekly to bimonthly regimen is a great place to start. If you're just trying to prevent discoloration, monthly use is a safe bet, especially if you Use quality products in your home,” Gilliam said.
