Vitamin E: The underrated ingredient for all skin problems

We can say that the chances of discovering the ingredient “tocopherol” or “tocopherol acetate” while browsing skin care products are quite high. That's because this ingredient (which sounds scary, but it's just the technical term for vitamin E) is one of the most versatile ingredients on the market.

Vitamin E is prized for its antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties and is an important ingredient in many cleansers, masks, moisturizers, serums, eye care products, lip oils, and more... the list goes on.

Read our complete guide to vitamin E below. With the help of Dr. We join Dr. Cheryl Rosen, Director of Dermatology at BowTied Life, to explain when to use it, how to use it, and which skin types will benefit the most.

What is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant found naturally in foods such as mangoes, sunflower seeds, avocados, almonds and spinach. “It has many important functions in the body, including protecting cells from free radical damage, supporting blood clotting, and maintaining the integrity of cell membranes,” says Dr. Rose.

“There are eight different forms of vitamin E: four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). The most active form of vitamin E in the body is alpha-tocopherol phenol."

As an antioxidant, its main purpose is to neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules produced by the body in response to environmental triggers such as UV rays.

By neutralizing these free radicals, vitamin E protects against oxidative stress (which breaks down collagen and damages the moisture barrier), thereby preventing dark spots, acne, dryness, fine lines, and sagging skin. To add more antioxidants, including vitamin E, to your routine, use our Antioxidant Oil Serum before or after your moisturizer.

Benefits of Vitamin E. Vitamin E works like all antioxidants: it strengthens the moisture barrier, prevents damage and enhances the protective effects of sunscreen. That's why we include a dose of vitamin E in our daily mineral sunscreen to give skin triple protection from the sun, pollution and blue light.

However, this vitamin has more than just antioxidant properties. Vitamin E has natural skin care benefits, moisturizing dry skin and smoothing rough, uneven skin structure.

It's also very gentle, making this ingredient a perfect choice if you have sensitive skin or are prone to inflammatory conditions like eczema and psoriasis. (If so, we recommend using the vitamin E in our Creamy Cleanser and Hydrating Milk Toner.) It's also safe for pregnancy.

According to Dr. Notable benefits of rose’s vitamin E include “protecting against sun damage, reducing wrinkles and fine lines, improving skin texture, restoring skin elasticity, and preventing dryness and flaking.” Apply vitamin E if any of the following are on your skin goals list:

How and when to use vitamin E?

Due to the many benefits of vitamin E, Dr. Every skin tone can benefit from incorporating this ingredient into their daily care routine, especially dry, sensitive, and aging skin. It can be used in the morning and/or evening without the risk of sensitivity or irritation.

While vitamin E is found in almost all skin care products, we especially recommend adding it to your cleanser to prevent flaky or dry skin. Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm is ideal for this purpose; the formula transforms into evaporated milk, leaving a silky-soft texture (but no oily residue).

In general, vitamin E is a great addition to any product targeting dry and aging skin, such as moisturizers, facial oils, serums, and treatments.

What can vitamin E be mixed with?

Another reason to love vitamin E? It goes well with almost any other ingredient in your daily routine.

We particularly recommend combining it with active ingredients that can sometimes have an aggressive or drying effect, such as retinol.

Vitamin E is one of the key ingredients in The Shortcut Overnight Facial, making this leave-in scrub gentle enough for all skin types (which is why the formula feels so soothing and smooth).

Another ingredient to look out for, especially if you're focusing on aging or dull skin, are vitamins C and E. When formulated together, their protective effects are doubled. Find this combination in our Brightening Eye Gel.
