Physical Exfoliants vs. Chemical Exfoliants

In recent years, the practice of peeling has become more frequent, and its importance is becoming more and more familiar to us.

It can help treat a range of skin problems such as acne, dullness and more – why? Over time, dead cells, debris, and dirt can accumulate and clog pores. That’s what exfoliation does, it removes all those impurities and cleanses the pores.

But there's been a big debate lately: Which peel is right for me, and which one is better?Generally speaking, there are two types of skin peels: physical peels and chemical peels.

Physical peels and chemical peels both serve the same purpose, which is to remove dead skin cells from the outside of the skin.

Our skin renews itself every 28 to 30 days, but the process doesn't always go smoothly, leading to clogged pores and flaky skin. Peels help remove dead skin cells from the skin and also stimulate skin cell renewal.

But how do the two species differ? Physical peeling. This type of peeling involves any type of physical abrasion of the skin.

This can be in the form of small beads and granules, a cloth, or a tool that scrubs away dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. Body scrubs are great because they have an immediate effect on the skin.

After a few peels, you may immediately notice that your skin looks brighter and less dull. Your skin will also look instantly brighter because the physical friction and massage of the skin stimulates blood circulation and your skin will look more awake and radiant!

However, for some people, physical exfoliants may be too harsh on the skin. People with more sensitive skin are at higher risk for irritation or infection when opting for physical peels.

Additionally, physical exfoliants come in the form of tools like konjac sponges and brushes, which require regular cleaning to prevent dirt and bacteria from building up on them. If you don’t clean your skin regularly, you have a higher risk of skin infection.

Chemical peel. When people hear the word "chemistry," they immediately feel scared. However, chemical peels are not that scary and actually contain only a small amount of acid, making them extremely gentle on the skin.

These acids help remove dead skin cells from your face and stimulate the renewal of new skin, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin. Chemical peels can generally be performed by anyone (unless you're sensitive to certain compounds)
and are an especially good option for people with sensitive skin because they don't require any harsh scrubbing. Chemical peels are also more flexible than physical peels, so they can come in different forms, such as cleansers, toners, and even serums, like our very own product at Joi, Enzyme Instant Glow Serum!

Made up of natural enzymes from pineapple and pomegranate, this serum gently exfoliates while soothing the skin. It helps dissolve excess surface cells and effectively exfoliates to reveal smooth, radiant skin.

Not only does this serum smooth your complexion, it also helps stimulate collagen production, reduce wrinkles, and brighten your complexion for glowing glass skin!

In principle, both types of peels are beneficial to the skin, but chemical peels may be gentler on people with sensitive skin. Have you ever wondered which skin peel is right for you? Comment with your picks in the comments below!
