Like our weekly Target run, salicylic acid is a skincare ingredient where you only get rid of one thing (acne) but you end up taking home more (brighter complexion, less oil , shrink pores...)
While this BHA is a proven dermatologist-recommended acne-fighting ingredient, few people know that it has many other benefits for the skin.
With the help of dermatologist Dr. Ciraldo MD, FAAD, below we dig into the benefits of salicylic acid (and how and when to use it).
What is Salicylic Acid? Salicylic acid, derived from willow bark, is the most common beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) in skin care products.
"The role of all hydroxy acids is to loosen dead cells, which causes them to break down the dead cells' keratin components," explains Ciraldo. Essentially, salicylic acid works like a chemical peel, helping to unclog pores, fade dark spots, lighten dull skin, and smooth rough, uneven skin texture.
What are the benefits of salicylic acid for the skin? However, this BHA is no ordinary exfoliant. Salicylic Acid is oil-soluble and penetrates deeper into the skin layers than Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), helping to draw dirt and oil out of pores.
It's also very gentle and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Put all of this together, and you have an effective treatment that nips acne in the bud.
"It soothes whiteheads and blackheads, reduces oiliness, and prevents breakouts," agrees Ciraldo. That's where our Salicylic Acid Acne Soothing Cleanser can help soothe breakouts without the risk of irritation.
Still a form of exfoliation, salicylic acid can also be used to treat uneven pigmentation, melasma, and dark spots from acne.
Use salicylic acid if any of the following are on your list of skin goals: Skin is cleared and acne is reduced. Pores are refined and free. More oil control. Reduces dark spots and acne scars. Even, radiant complexion. Reduce inflammation
How and when to use salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is found in all forms of skin care, from cleansers and solutions to body treatments and masks. Do you have acne on your body?
Spritz on our Acne Control Body Mist to reap its benefits. For best results, apply salicylic acid morning and/or evening.
The FDA classifies salicylic acid as an over-the-counter acne medication when it's present at 0.5 percent to 2 percent. Ciraldo advises avoiding salicylic acid if you have "severe facial flushing, broken blood vessels, or rosacea," as the acidic pH can exacerbate these conditions.
We always recommend that you consult a healthcare professional before using topical salicylic acid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can I mix salicylic acid with other ingredients? Despite the scary connotations of the word "acid," salicylic acid is so gentle that it can be layered with most other products in your skincare routine. It is especially effective at improving clarity and renewing the complexion when formulated with other acids such as lactic or glycolic acid.
As such, it is the main ingredient in the AHA-BHA complex in the Instant Peeling Mask, which works to fight various skin concerns at the same time.
If you have sensitive skin, combine salicylic acid with extra soothing ingredients like niacinamide or polyglutamic acid in your moisturizer.
We do not recommend using Salicylic Acid and Retinol in your daily routine to avoid irritation unless they have been formulated together. Instead, separate them overnight.
