Best anti-acne ingredients for acne-prone skin

When we get too focused on getting rid of acne, most of us go for the first product we see on the shelf that actually promises just that (if you've ever smeared a tube of toothpaste on your face, this is it for you of). known known). with this feeling).

But there are good reasons why some acne products work better than others, and it depends on the formula, formula, formula. So skip the research and check out this quick guide.

If you have acne-prone skin, keep an eye out for these ingredients, which range from powerful actives like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to gentle acne-calming agents like niacinamide and zinc…

Sulfur. You may have first learned about this element in chemistry class, but sulfur has been used as an acne treatment for centuries. It's an all-star ingredient for acne-prone skin, especially since it's non-irritating.

Not only does sulfur destroy bacteria, it also breaks down dead skin cells and clears clogged pores. No wonder it's the top ingredient in our Game Over Acne Dryness Treatment, which removes impurities and reduces the appearance of breakouts overnight once applied to those pesky whiteheads and blackheads.

Salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is one of the most popular BHAs (you know, those exfoliating acids that work deep into pores to eliminate impurities) and is a great addition to any routine. It reduces shine and removes dirt and dead skin cells from clogged pores.

This is beneficial whether you have active acne or are about to break out. We use 1.5% salicylic acid in our Acne Soothing Cleanser, so you can treat (and prevent) blemishes while cleansing - all without drying out and tightening your skin.

Zinc. Another natural element, this gentle acne treatment is known for its ability to calm inflammation, the root cause of all breakouts.

Use zinc specifically if you struggle with oiliness and shine as it is a DHT blocker (the hormone responsible for hair growth and oiliness) that helps regulate sebum production and control oil.

An easy way to incorporate zinc into your acne-prone skin care routine is to squeeze a few drops of Just Breathe Clarifying Serum into your skin and let it absorb for a minute or two before moisturizing.

Tea tree oil. Derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, this essential oil has powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which is why we include it in our Acne Control Body Mist.

If you're into making and picking habits, it can also help eliminate scars and blemishes after breakouts. Note: Never apply tea tree oil directly to your skin as it is too concentrated to be used on its own.

Nicotinamide. Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its pore-tightening properties, among other benefits. It is one of the ingredients that supports overall skin health.

It is often associated with inflammation, acne, and redness. It even has skin-whitening effects and helps heal acne scars and the discoloration they leave behind. Benefit from the power of our purifying serum.

Charcoal. Charcoal has been used in various forms for years, whether in water filtration or in the “detox” gray smoothies you see all over Instagram.

When it comes to skin care, charcoal maintains these cleansing properties by drawing debris and bacteria out of pores (it actually acts like a magnet), thus soothing and preventing acne. If your skin needs pore detox, use our Find Clarity Purifying Face Mask to remove impurities.

Volume. Clay masks and spot treatments are very popular in skin care because they gently exfoliate without irritating the skin, making them great for people with sensitive skin.

Clays like bentonite and kaolin are two sebum-absorbing ingredients that draw out excess oil and bacteria from your pores. That's why you'll find clay in our Acne Dry Treatment and Cleansing Mask.

Wondering why the ever-popular benzoyl peroxide is missing from this list? Although benzoyl peroxide is found in many effective over-the-counter acne treatments, it can be extremely irritating when applied to the skin, causing itching, flaking, and redness.

Hyperpigmentation can also occur due to its effects, which can also make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. For these reasons, we don’t use benzoyl peroxide in any of our products, opting instead for salicylic acid, a gentler alternative that provides similar skin-clearing results. Still confused about the ingredient list? We don't blame you. Search our growing ingredient glossary for a term you don't understand, or simply click or hover over an ingredient in a product's ingredient list to see its definition.
