5 Must-Do’s for Your Spring Cleaning Beauty Routine

We all know spring is the time of year to put away your coats and sweaters, deep clean your refrigerator, and reorganize your closets, but how about using this time to refresh your skincare routine?

Skin is the body's largest organ—it needs just as much care as your home and wardrobe (if not more). Taking the time to clean up your daily routine (not just in the spring!) will keep your regimen effective and reduce the risk of spreading germs and bacteria.

Not sure where to start? Ditch the Clorox wipes and consider them your handy guide to a clean beauty routine.

Check expiry date. While you're keeping an eye on expiration dates when cleaning your refrigerator, you should also check your beauty products. If you missed it, yes, your skin care routine is about to expire.

Look for the PAO (expiration date after opening) symbol on most products - it looks like a jar with an open lid - and throw away any items you've held on to for too long. No symbol? Most products are valid for 12 months. To be on the safe side, assume six months for particularly active products (such as acid-based treatments).

And get ready for next year! For recent purchases, take a moment to write the date on the bottom with a permanent marker, or set a calendar reminder for the time indicated by the PAO symbol so you remember when you first opened it.

Replace water-based products. An increase in body temperature is usually accompanied by a decrease in fluid intake. This is also when the dry winter air starts to give way to moisture (aka moisture in the air).

So keep water-based products at the forefront of your vanity. Oil-based creams may feel too heavy on your skin during spring and summer, but a refreshing moisturizer with moisture-locking ingredients like aloe vera in Dew Point

Moisturizing Gel Cream can keep your skin from feeling dry. Sterilize your beauty tools. Any tool that comes into contact with your skin should be cleaned regularly, but we all know that's not always the case.

Avoid spreading dirt, germs, and bacteria (which can lead to acne, dermatitis, and more) by thoroughly cleaning all your beauty tools: cleansing tool attachments, makeup brushes, facial massagers, loofahs, dermaplaners, and micro rollers… very much like this almost everything.

Metal tools: Dip or spray with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and allow to air dry for 5-10 minutes.

BRUSHING: To clean, massage baby shampoo or mild cleanser (our gel cleanser works great) onto wet bristles, then rinse. To disinfect it, make a solution of two parts white vinegar and one part water, place the bristles in it and scrub for 3-5 minutes, then rinse.

Stone Rollers and Massagers: Wipe with a cloth dampened with warm (not hot) water and a mild detergent. Loofah: Rinse with hot water and soak in dilute hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes. Air dry in a well-ventilated area.

Donate unused products. We all have a beauty junk drawer—you know, the one filled with inappropriate products that either you were born with or that you thought didn't work for you. Ask yourself honestly: If I haven't used this yet, would I really do it?

But before throwing anything away, consider donating unopened, unused products to charity (like Beauty Bus) or giving them to friends. If the product has been opened, try to find other uses for it. The moisturizer that refreshes you can still be used as a hand cream. Is your face a little too fat? Put it on your body.

Don't forget to wear sunscreen We already know that sunscreen isn’t just for the warmer months, but should be used every day, year-round. However, as the days get longer and the UV index rises, now is a good time to take stock of your sunscreen stockpile. Check the expiry date – expired sunscreen won’t protect against UV rays – and make sure you’re applying enough SPF every day (of course, use ½ teaspoon). This is also a good time to add more vitamin C into your daily routine for added antioxidant protection. Stroke of Brilliance Brightening Serum is just for you.
